Sensor Overview

IST's innovative thin-film conductivity sensor was developed for the purpose of measuring the concentration of ions in an electrolyte. Although a simple concept, the measurement of electrical conductivity in liquid substances is a very powerful analytical and diagnostic tool in a variety of applications. The modern, thin-film conductivity sensor element developed by IST is a viable alternative to the classical, bulky conductivity sensors of the past.

Key features include:

  • Conductivity range: 100 μS/cm to 200 mS/cm (other ranges on request
  • Temperature range: -30 °C to +100 °C (temperatures up to +130 °C possible)
  • Connection: Typically with Pt/Ni-wire or Cu/Ag-wire with PTFE-insulation (AWG 30)

Theoretical Background
An electrolyte is a liquid containing ions. Under a voltage, ions act as charge carriers and a current flows. Therefore, quality of the liquid can be assessed by determining the conductivity. The conductivity of the liquid depends on two temperature-dependent parameters: ion concentration and their mobility. For improved accuracy a temperature sensor is placed directly at the point of measurement.

Temperature Compensation
The temperature of the medium is an important factor in the conductivity of an electrolyte. It is therefore important to have an accurate temperature sensor for compensation. The thin-film conductivity sensor, developed by IST, consists of two current electrodes, two measuring electrodes and a thin-film platinum temperature sensor for temperature compensation.
